淑萍妈上吊自尽，淑萍拿着手镯到集市上出售，在出售过程中有两个男骗子打手镯的主意，站在不远处的金水生怕淑萍上当赶紧出声提醒，两个男骗子见事情败露，气急之下上前教训了金水一顿。淑萍对金水充满感激，与金水在茶楼中喝茶，在喝茶过程中淑萍以两块大洋的低价将手镯卖给金水。不等金水掏出大洋递给淑萍，邱咏赋来到茶楼中夺过淑萍手中的手镯，数落金水身为男人竟然以两块大洋的低价卖走手镯，淑萍见邱咏赋故意捣乱，气急之下上前与邱咏赋发生争吵，邱咏赋争不过淑萍只得转身离去。金水得到了淑萍的手镯，一想到手镯价格仅值两块大洋，金水过意不去，希望淑萍能提供住址，以便日后积攒了一些钱再补交一些钱给淑萍。淑萍不把金水的话放在心上，并没有透露家庭住址。邱咏赋回到家中越想越气，最后来到淑萍妈身边，要求淑萍妈同意让淑萍嫁入邱家，否则到时一定会让淑萍妈离开邱家跟着老爷去南洋。淑萍妈见邱咏赋逼人太甚，悲痛欲绝上吊自杀，淑萍回到邱府得知母亲自杀，悲痛欲绝来到母亲的遗体旁边拿起一封遗书阅读。站在一边的一个邱家下人将事情经过告与淑萍，淑萍悲痛欲绝向邱咏赋的住处赶去，邱母虽然知道是儿子邱咏赋犯下了过错，但却理直气壮在院子里面与淑萍争吵，邱老爷闻讯而来心知对不住淑萍母女，愧疚之下让账房先生准备一些银两赔给淑萍。金水即将与淑萍成亲，金水妈已经听到淑萍妈上吊自杀的消息，金水得知丈母娘出事，情急之下打算去参加丧礼，在母亲的劝说下，金水打消参加丈母娘丧礼的想法。淑萍埋葬完母亲回到邱府穿上新娘装等待金水家人来迎娶，迎亲队伍来到邱家将淑萍送到了金水的村子里，当天金水妈摆上酒席招待一众乡邻，本来成亲是一件天大的喜事，由于国民党来村中抓壮丁，金水妈不得不提前结束酒席。当天晚上金水将淑萍背到家中成亲，淑萍由于蒙着头纱并没有认出金水，直到金水摘下淑萍头上的头纱，淑萍才记起在集市上卖了手镯给金水。第二天邱咏赋来金水村中闹事，金水理直气壮与邱咏赋打了一架。淑萍嫁入金家的头天，金水妈对淑萍极为不满，当着金水的面数落淑萍嫁入金家不早上起也不愿意做事。金水非常疼爱淑萍，一听母亲数落淑萍，金水赶紧挤出一副笑脸帮助淑萍说好话。淑萍在家中吃完饭，跟着金水离开金家务农，金水带着淑萍来到邻居美珠身边，向美珠介绍淑萍的身份。
