袁芳死后，陶岳明和朱绮婷都很伤心。朱绮婷帮不方便出面的陶岳明，为袁芳料理好后事，并把耳环交给了陶岳明，陶岳明不明白母亲为什么会给“朱景兰”。朱景兰见妹妹与陶岳明越走越近，不禁妒火中烧，生恨欲除朱绮婷而后快。“朱绮婷”指使宋贵成到长乐坊，当众把和朱景兰两人旧事都抖落出来，后又到约定地点，趁宋贵成接过银子无防备时，用簪子扎向其喉管杀死了他，利用身份互换的机会嫁祸给绮婷。捕头说朱绮婷有重大嫌疑，将她带到县衙审问，知县认为宋贵成毁了“朱景兰”清誉致使她怀恨在心起了杀念，而且衙役们在现场发现了“朱景兰”在叠翠轩定做的一只簪子。朱绮婷不肯认罪，惨受五十大板杖刑被押入了大牢。朱景兰来到牢中探视朱绮婷，向绮婷宣泄愤怒说只有扫除了她这个障碍，自己才能顺利嫁入陶家。“朱绮婷”从大牢回来告诉母亲和陶岳明，宋贵成的确是“朱景兰”杀的。陶岳明看到她一脸平静，没有丝毫悲伤和焦急的样子很奇怪，觉得眼前的“朱绮婷”好像变了一个人。陶岳明认为这件事没有那么简单，决定自行调查其中蹊跷，陶岳明来到大牢看望朱绮婷，朱绮婷问他是什么时候爱上自己的，陶岳明说自己第一眼看到朱绮婷就爱上了她的勇敢。绮婷听了十分感动，让陶岳明好好对待“妹妹”。为了成全姐姐，朱绮婷无奈决定画押认罪，不日即将问斩。陶岳明让朱景兰一起找证据救朱绮婷，景兰阻挠引起了他的怀疑。管家福叔端来煎菜饼说饼是新来大厨煎但馅料还是自己配的，虽然外观变了里面却是一样的。陶岳明从话里得到启发很快便发现了真相，朱景兰为了消除怀疑，故作痛苦地辩解，主动亲吻陶岳明并要脱他衣服，陶岳明就此确认眼前的这个“朱绮婷”并不是自己的爱人。并再次来到牢中求证，喊出了绮婷的名字，绮婷只得承认与姐姐互换身份之事。
