中规中矩的白领雷特，突然间在办公室里发狂，用刀砍伤无数同事。然后，眼球转个不停。当沃尔特、奥利维娅等人找到他询问原因的时候，他突然间因为疲劳过度死于众人眼前。沃尔特做尸检的时候，发现雷特的头脑中有一个小芯片。不久，又一个女子死亡，她的头脑中同样有一个芯片。皮特和奥利维娅探访雷特夫人后得知，雷特经常失眠。雷特的日记显示，他有一段时间经常做恶梦，接受治疗后，能够进入深度睡眠。根据线索，皮特和奥利维娅找到了一个睡眠研究机构，并遇到奈雅克医生。奈雅克医生表示两个死者都是自己的病人，而他的病人名单在电脑里。但是电脑被破坏。不久，奈雅克医生的助理哲克被杀死。奈雅克亦接到恐吓信，信中说：“如果继续与警方和作的话，你就会像哲克一样。”沃尔特用自己和卡施纳探员做芯片实验，他发现原来这个芯片不是帮助人进入睡眠，而偷走病人的睡眠。而偷睡眠的人，就像吸毒一样，有迷幻的感觉。而且，这东西能上瘾。奥利维娅想到父亲是酒鬼，醉酒时和平时完全两样。于是，她猜到奈雅克医生可能就是幕后黑手，警方赶到奈雅克家，果然后看到他在偷梦。不过，这次剂量太大，奈雅克当场死亡。
