原来四公子的住处是一个反清革命党人出入频繁的小旅馆。潘天赐得知后决定，给儿子下猛药、出狠招。冯师爷觉得，潘天赐一旦出手，后果不堪设想，便将这事透给了潘老夫人。老夫人慌了，求老爷放过儿子。潘天赐让李三带路，找到了那家小旅店。他命令四公子回家，并发出了最后通牒。谁知，四公子不承认柳叶生的孩子是他的，潘天赐一怒之下扇了儿子一个耳光。离开旅店的时候，潘天赐发现儿子的枕下有一本反清檄文抄本《大道》，心生一计，便随手塞进了袖管。潘天赐回家后让冯师爷抄录了《金刚经》。又找来李三，让他再去一趟四公子所在的小旅店，替他秘密办件事。冯师爷向江宁府告了密。四公子被江宁府衙的捕头以乱党罪名抓走。四公子被抓引得潘太太和柳叶的极度紧张，潘太太又哭又闹责怪老爷陷害儿子，威胁要上吊。只有潘天赐心里明白他使得是“借势教子”之计。潘天赐去了大狱，看望儿子。四公子表态：“父亲若能救儿出狱，孩儿一定回家好好过日子。”潘天赐见到江宁知府焦湛之，问儿何罪？焦知府令属下送来罪证抄本《大道》。潘天赐翻看时，用染上了油墨的手指悄悄一摁，将封面“大道”变成了“太道”。而中间内容却是由冯师爷手抄的《金刚经》。焦只得放了四公子。回到了潘府，四公子只好俯首贴耳，好好地和柳叶过日子。董二见事起又打潘府的主意，不料最后仍是无颜而回。四公子与柳叶仍心存芥蒂。事情败露，冯师爷逃出潘家。
