正扬得知爷爷孙大鹏重病危急，要赶回美国探望，临走前约了念慈见面，并把自己写的信交给她。念慈看了信，心头一震，赶紧把信交给秋菊看，秋菊看了信的内容，整个人激动地浑身颤抖，因为这封信的内容表达了当年他被妈妈狠心地交给爸爸，而进到一个陌生的家庭，从那一刻起，他感觉成了永远的孤儿，再也不知道什么是快乐，这二十多年来，母爱是他永远的乡愁。秋菊和念慈打听出正扬已去机场准备搭机飞美国，于是母女俩急忙赶去机场。车上，秋菊哭着，喃喃自语：对不起，正扬，对不起。机场，正扬朝登机门走去。秋菊和念慈赶来急着找人，一面呼唤着，正扬似乎听见，回头看望，只见机场人来人往，而没有看见秋菊和念慈，于是他进了登机门离去。秋菊心碎地哭着，二十年了，为什么连一眼都见不到。秋菊愈哭愈伤心，念慈在她身旁落泪，轻拍着母亲安抚其情绪。秋菊想搭机追去美国看正扬。为了要探听出正扬在美国的地址，她来坤耀建设公司，没想到这家建设公司的总经理就是耀宗。两人这一见面，都感到惊愕也感慨万千。秋菊自责当年做错了决定，以为正扬在耀宗身边，会过着好日子，会受到好的栽培，可是现在才知道正扬一点都不快乐，一直都很孤单，因而责问耀宗为什么没有好好关心正扬。耀宗有点恼羞成怒，认为自己已尽到责任，让正扬受最好的教育，过的是上流社会的日子，这还有什么不满意的。秋菊不愿再与耀宗争辩，只想能见到魂牵梦萦的儿子正扬，哀求耀宗告诉她正扬在美国的地址，却遭到耀宗残酷的拒绝，甚至还无情地说，现在正扬的妈妈是雅婷，而不是秋菊，见了面又有什么意义。耀宗的冷漠让秋菊心痛，也无比的失望。
