《祖母的故事》二十年代末，少年宝生跟叔叔和婶子去探望住在南方的祖母，令宝生惊异地是他竟然会有三个祖母，尤其是美丽的三祖母看上去还没有婶子大，而祖父却早在多年以前已经去世，在这个深宅大院里，宝生通过一系列的细节领略到了大祖母的威严，二祖母的善良和三祖母的孤寂，很快宝生便喜欢上了年轻、美丽的三祖母，而三祖母也非常喜欢宝生，把他当成自己的孩子。对于比自己年纪还要小的三祖母，叔叔一直是毕恭毕敬，言必称三妈，但对于她跟宝生的交往却颇有不满，而婶子对于这个年龄跟自己相仿的女人却有着一份深深的同情，而大祖母把这一切都看在了眼里。夜晚，宝生屡屡听到院子里有声响，他疑是院子里闹鬼，禀告了大祖母，三祖母显得很是不安，大祖母不露声色地说那是宝生的错觉。宝生越来越觉察出这个院子里深埋着的许多秘密，也越来越体味到三祖母的不幸。终于一天夜晚，宝生目睹了三祖母的出逃，而恰恰被大祖母撞上，三祖母不由惊惶失措，两个女人默默对视着，宝生意识到灾难降临了，可大祖母却无言地缓缓走进三祖母房间，替她关上了灯，锁好了门，三祖母怀着对大祖母的无限感激离家出走。三祖母的出逃使叔叔暴跳如雷，怒斥她是下贱的人！发誓一定要把她抓回来，打断她的腿！大祖母威严地令叔叔的生身母亲二祖母狠狠地教训了叔叔，把他挡了下来。中秋节到了，饭桌上大祖母给三祖母留下了一副碗筷，一家人默默地吃着，宝生也结束了他的祖母家之行。
