林晓燕向钟元年汇报自己对这场对抗演习的不同看法。她认为，从表面上看是赵梓明取得了对抗演习的胜利，但赵梓明的打法过于传统，不可取，龙凯峰虽然没有夺到绿旗，但战术思想和作战过程是现代的，科学的，如果仅仅以是否夺得绿旗为胜者，这个规则是不公平的。林晓燕的看法引起钟元年的深思。究竟是把这次演习的胜者推上师长的宝座，还是从发展的眼光来看待师长的人选，身负重任的钟元年一直在犹豫不决。随钟元年前来考察干部的王强部长提出还是由赵梓明当师长，而钟元年则钟情新人龙凯峰。王部长认为钟元年有些喜新厌旧，移情别恋。钟元年经反复考虑，决定采取一种即喜新又不厌旧的办法。师部礼堂内，数百名军官集会，赵梓明、吴义文凝神屏息，静候着钟元年宣布命令……出人意料的是，龙凯峰被提升为副师长并代理师长职务。钟元年会后对龙凯峰说：你头上这个代字能不能去掉不在于我，而在于你自己。又对吴义文说：希望你能拉偏套，使正劲。赵梓明成了老部下的部下，心中很不是滋味儿。龙凯峰主动找赵梓明交谈，被赵梓明拒绝了。龙凯峰一时感到独独起来。林晓燕特别高兴，并对龙凯峰说，这不是一份可以谦让的容誉，而是一份沉甸甸的责任。当了代师长的龙凯峰心中反而多了份忧郁。韩雪突然把几张男人的照片交给龙凯峰，让他转交给林晓燕，说是她为林晓燕物色的对象。赵梓明心中不服，借着酒劲找钟元年论理。钟元年一席推心置腹的长谈，使赵梓明心灵受到很大震动……赵梓明在父亲墓前独坐到天明，思前虑后，看到了自己的不足，感到自己留下会让龙凯峰放不开手脚，决定提出转业。吴义文也是夜不能寐，在家里摆弄他的"华容道"，但总是找不到出路。妻子劝他想开点，当不上师长，就找找关系到军分区当司令。吴义文不服气，但又不知下一步怎么走。桂平原前来为他剖析人事：龙凯峰现在仅仅是个代师长，代就是意味着有他代不成的那一天。桂平原劝吴义文以退为进，并断言吴义文必将成为师长。第二天一早赵梓明向师党委递交了自己申请转业的报告。龙凯峰前来劝说，并提出向上级要求调换代师长，被赵梓明狠狠地骂了一顿。赵梓明语重心长地对龙凯峰说：你就是当之无愧的师长，你要是干不好这个师长，就是你一生的耻辱，也是我赵梓明的耻辱。
