肖万在县政府门口叫卖叮叮糖，司务长出来买了一斤回去腌泡菜，没想到第二天县政府的人出现集体中毒现象。县里怀疑卖糖的肖万是特务，便把他抓起来关进小屋拘留候审。肖万不知这些是周克明的安排，在屋子里大叫自己上面有人，但无人理睬。半夜，潜伏在政府里的特务放走了肖万。敌人由此暴露，周克明却暂时按兵不动，留待以后秘密逮捕。骆文光和侯兴摆酒给肖万压惊，肖万在酒桌上又大吹特吹，说他表舅听到他被关起的消息后，立刻安排将他礼送出门。肖万的话传到马登陆耳中，马登陆更加看重他。马登陆派骆文光一再催促肖万，肖万也觉得吃了对方这么多好处，再不回话实在说不过去。联想起前两天，小刘同志告诉自己，因之前在两河口受到土匪袭击，共产党以后会避开那条路线，肖万便自作聪明地告诉骆文光，马上会有个共产党的大官途径两河口。谁知竟然一语成谶：马登陆真的听信了肖万所谓的“情报”，而那天也真的有位首长路过两河口！这一次，解放军部队损失惨重，警卫员死伤多人，首长也生死不明。得知消息的肖万这下慌了，这回可绝对是掉脑袋的大事，自己明明是胡编的，可是跳进黄河也洗不清了呀！肖万想到了自杀，但又没有自杀的勇气。隔天，肖万被马登陆召见。马登陆告诉肖万，台湾方面已任命他为少校，并奖励他两根黄鱼，希望肖万再接再厉。可肖万却连连摆手，声称自己不想再干，只想讨个婆娘过安稳日子。这时，陈霁云再次上山，紧逼梅虹。
