长安四年(704年)八月，八十二岁的武皇卧病在床。狄仁杰的话声犹在耳。她采纳了狄仁杰的建议，任命张柬之做了宰相。很少有人知道此时武皇的良苦用心。神龙元年(705年)正月二十二日，张柬之、崔玄(日韦)等迎李显太子，杀张昌宗、张易之等，上门逼宫。张柬之和崔玄韦来到武皇面前，直言让她让出帝位交出江山。武皇笑而作答，说她一直等着他们来找她的这一天。张崔二人疑惑不解。武皇告诉他们，如果不是要将天下交还给李唐，她不会用此二人作她的左膀右臂。张崔二人这才明白武皇的良苦用心。武皇平静地下了诏，把皇位传给了李显。在执政了十五年之后，她把自己一手精心治理好的国家，又还给了自己的儿子，把治理得外靖内平，仓廪充盈的国家还给了李家。而李显不敢接这个皇帝之位，力辞不受。武皇告诉他，这个天下是李家的，这一点她早就心知肚明，并且作好了充分的准备。她之所以采纳了狄仁杰的主张，就是为了把天下交到李家手里这一天。她让李显择时即位，并提出了关于她自己身后之事的两个要求，一是与高宗合葬，二是不要再叫她皇帝，她只是高宗的皇后。李显尊母亲为“则天大圣皇后”，并为母亲立下了那座无字丰碑，一直到今天。
