郑世昌拜托琴师严格训练，在常乐又来接裘百灵逛街时，他训斥了百灵，直接去找白长起。社会局要在戏院存放抗战救灾物资，白长起将试戏日期提前。白长起要世昌放弃试戏，世昌心气极高，表示一定要演。

试戏日期的提前造成了戏班空前的紧张气氛，使排练更加不顺利。已经暗地里喜欢上百灵的俞松，听了百灵的演唱直摇头。郑世昌在照相馆了解到青莲就是彩云的真相。他告诉了高小菊。高小菊对彩云的突然出现一时承受不住，跑到街上，被夜风吹病。郑世昌猜想白长起隐瞒真相，一定有什么事情发生了，他和罗瑞英商量先保守住秘密，把试戏拿下来再说。俞元乾见姑娘们没有准备好，劝郑世昌放弃，郑世昌却认为问题不大。

白长起为了让郑世昌输得心服口服，请来多家报馆记者和戏院老板观看戏班试戏，特别叮嘱常乐要请到申江戏院的老板俞元乾。上台前，高小菊怕影响嗓子的发挥没有吃药。俞松鼓励裘百灵努力表演。郑世昌的一番训话增加了紧张气氛。试戏过程中，高小菊在台上打起喷嚏，俞元乾圆场说是个苗子。裘百灵唱得一团糟，来看戏的戏院老板纷纷离席，罗瑞英刚上台就被轰了下去。郑世昌异常难堪，白长起劝他早做打算。小菊检讨自己没演好，世昌认为是自己自不量力。罗瑞英埋怨百灵就知道臭美，百灵认为试砸了又不是她一个人的责任，有满肚子委屈。第二天一早郑世昌就出去了。白长起来到戏班，将责任推到两个琴师身上，遭到羞辱的琴师一怒之下离开戏班。

青莲为麻醉自己，把精力耗费在牌桌上，天天陪丁香等人打麻将，或者出席各种开幕式剪彩。在杨氏珠宝店开业典礼上，阿标想和青莲套近乎，被青莲拒绝，阿标决心一定要把青莲弄到手，通知手下让白长起来见他。

俞元乾来看望戏班姑娘们，没见到世昌，让姑娘们告诉世昌去见他。白长起在雨花香茶园找到郑世昌，给他看当天的报纸。郑世昌看到比戏班姑娘们明显高出一筹的马香瑶和姚飞飞的演出，感到戏班确实没有在申城生存立足的实力。韶华戏班试演砸台的消息上了报纸，引起青莲注意。
